In the newspaper, under the "Trends" section, a pooch named "Mr. Winkle" was identified as "the next big thing." This is a real dog, and there is actually a debate over what kind of dog he is, or even if he is a dog at ALL. According to my paper, "he looks less like a dog than an Ewok on a caffiene binge."
But nevertheless, Mr. Winkle will soon be commanding an entire empire. The "thing" has
appeared on the Rosie O'Donnell show, and Mattel has signed a contract to produce plush Mr. Winkles. There are "WHAT IS MR. WINKLE??" posters, and there's talk of a Mr. Winkle movie even. It turns out people love debating exactly what he is (my paper asks, "Is he a Pokemon-style digital dog? An ancient demon? A hamster with a perm?"). In fact, the thing's owner, Lara Jo Regan of LA, registers 4 million visitors per month on her official Mr. Winkle web site
