A very embarassing question...

OK, so I have this cousin right? We're about the same age and all and we grew up together so we're practically best friends. We were always into the same stuff, like the cheesy first season of Power Rangers or the first gen of Pokemon. Basically, nostalgia is a huge foundation in our relationship.

So there's this convention coming up that she managed to get passes for my brithday. The thing is, she refuses to go unless she cosplays. Don't get me wrong, she's very passionate about anime but she will not set foot in the building without dressing up as a character from the other side of the Pacific. She wanted me to choose her costume though and I figured something shoujo would suffice.

So I look up some series and I was pretty shocked. I mean, looking at the girls from Pretty Cure and comparing them to the Sailor Scouts is just an astounding gap. These girls look no older than 10 and they show even more leg than the scouts. I decided to have her try on an Usagi cosplay, but when she saw the skirt length, she accused me of being a gross pervert, and to prove her wrong, I tried to show her the designs of those from Pretty Cure and Lyrical nanoha but all that did is convince her I'm some pedo-perv for even knowing these shows exist despite the fact that we watched something similar together as kids.

What do I do guys? I don't wanna break off my friendship with her, but I'm afraid of watching any more shoujo. Is the future of shoujo really headed towards a heavily lolicon based character designs? What happened to the old days when these long running shows had some dignity in their character designs?

Incest is legal in most states as long as it's not with your brother or sister.

Remember the days when girls were women? I do. Let me tell you about this magical time called the 1990s. In the 1990s we had golden rays of light shine onto our faces every damn day while we watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sailor Moon. And we loved every minute of it. By the way, does anyone remember Sewer Sharks? I think I do. We ate our crappy hot pockets while we eagerly awaited the next episode of Power Rangers and our friends would come home from school with the latest EGM which stank because he took into the bathroom at lunch and forgot to bring toilet paper. I mean, sure it stank, but it was EGM. That was our world.

GOD I MISS THE 90s.

GIVE THEM BACK.

Don't you that Japan is full of pedofiles now ever since they left the States? Once they heard of the age of consent is below 18 they just hopped on the next pepo plane to Tokyo.

The sad thing is half this post is true.

Really? Well, no wonder everybody looks 20 years younger in anime. Remember when men in anime looked like huge burly guys who could rip a building in half? Now they resemble in-store models for department store clothing.

Whatever happened to predictability? The milkman, the paperboy, evening tv?

Today's kids will never experience the gloriousness of our childhoods. We had Tupac while they have to settle for Lady Gaga. They're reading the Twilight trilogy while our bookstores would order the monthly edition of Goosebumps and force us on a waiting list just to read it. Our SNES and Genesis were lucky to receive competent arcade ports, while they download HD versions of it for pennie son the dollars. Now, their girlfriends look like they belong in day care rather than in high school.

The 90's weren't that good. We had crap movies like T2, Goodfellas, and whatever crap Disney put out. We're much better off now, with Transformers 2.

AHHH the age of TGIF! I can smell my milk and cookies sitting next to the TV while I sit anxiously waiting for the newest episode of Hangin' With Mr. Cooper.

Remember that show? I do. I remember Mark Curry.

Now girls dress all slutty and trampy and invoking incest upon us. We didn't get this in the 1990s! We had higher standards back then! It was either second cousin or better, none of this sick cosplaying crap.

I sincerely hope this works out for you and your cousin, but please make sure she wears this outfit. This is not just striking a blow for feminist rights, but also the 1990s.

I remember the borning comedy and lame timing on the show. It's no Seinfeld or Married with Children. Now THOSE are comedys.

What's wrong with that?

Feminists are overrated, so are female characters written to be realistic. Sarah Conner, Ripley, and Buffy are boring. Now Mikaela Banes, we need more female characters like her, or the Bond girls.

I totally know what you mean dude. My cousin and I were total bros until we went through puberty. Then things got awkward between us and we tried to keep our distance. Still, the power of anime and nostalgia always bonded us together in ways you would never understand.

Speaking of slutty jailbait, my cousin recently went to Wondercon dressed as Dawn from Pokemon. She came up to my house in a mad suit however, which made me think she had changed her mind. She claimed Dawn once dressed as a cafe maid, but I refuse to believe her. Here's her pic from that time.

Don't get me wrong, the 90's were fine. We had Batman Returns, for crying out loud! Much better than that Bat Thug Nolan crap. But you're looking at the 90's with rose tinted glasses, when you need to view them with some cheap sunglasses.

Look at that picture! Look at it!

Pokemon is a total shell of it's former glorious (re: 90s) self because of outfits like that! Where's the mystery? If I wanted to see girls like "that" I would go back sitting under the bleachers at lunch with my face tilted up. I mean, in the 1990s you had to work for your "content". Now it's just given to you.

Integral, I don't think you understand the 1990s. It's not about Batman Returns, it's about the comics and animated shows. Those are things that made life worth living, now it's all bastardized and wrong. It's just not the same.

The comics were an abomination, and were for ages until Quesada took over Marvel. Who'd want to read that Watchmen Vertigo crap when you can read about an Avengers where everyone is unmasked, Spider-Man where the past 20 years mean nothing and Aunt May is shacking it up with Jameson's dad, X-Men without mutants, or about 20 different Moon Knight reboots that add up to nothing a year? Diversity is the spice of life, and pretention is gawdy.

As for cartoons, it's about even. The Simpsons was much better then than now, but Family Guy is better than that ever was. Thank god for Batman in the 90's, though. We had a good cartoon and Burton was still around. None of this Bat Thug nonsense.
