The following video-game-related items are so rare, you probably haven't heard of any of them. They are all real, there is only a handful in the world of each, and you can NEVER HAVE THEM, because of the wallet-stopping combination of being both expensive AND totally useless. You can look, though. But you can't ever touch. Especially the $200 air freshener.

"DOLPHIN" GAMECUBE DEVELOPMENT KIT WITH PROGRAMMER'S GUIDES INCLUDED

What secrets do they hold? Only two people know, now

This is the REAL Dolphin emulator, folks

eBay Price: $442.77

ALMOST-COMPLETE NES COLLECTION

He's only missing the actual Nintendo World Championships and a couple rare pirate games. Other than that, he sold it all in one package, plus European exclusives, an M82 Display Unit, and one of those Hands-Free disabled-kid controllers

He didn't make a photo of the entire thing, just in pieces, so I went with the Hands-Free as an image. You don't mind, right?

eBay Price: $75,000

FIFTEEN GAMECUBE KIOSK STORE DEMO DISCS

Can you believe these came in custom keepcases? Most demo makers don't bother with that. They're even numbered. It's as if they were made with the collectors' black market in mind

eBay Price: $450

USED COPY OF "DONKEY KONG JR. MATH"

eBay Price: $349.99

RARE JAPANESE TETRIS PIRATE FOR THE MEGA DRIVE (GENESIS)

Nintendo had the exclusive license for Tetris at the time this came out

The seller did a bit of price gouging here. It may be rare, but there's no way it's this expensive

eBay Price: $10,710.00

Later on, another Mega Drive Tetris -- this one signed by Alexi Pajitnov -- sold for a cool million

MGS PREMIUM PACKAGE

You get: the game, a soundtrack CD of past Metal Gear hits, collectible cards, a T-shirt and a pair of dog tags

It's only recently that America and Europe have gotten into the whole "ridiculous collector's edition" way of selling games. This version of MGS was Japan-only

As a bonus, the box is large enough to hide inside and escape detection! (Actually, that's not true, but wouldn't it be something?)

eBay Price: $169.95

PLAYSTATION "DEVELOPER'S DEMO CD"

People who preordered the original Playstation before it came out were given a CD containing songs by bands under the Sony label like Korn. If you put the CD into the Playstation after you got it, it would give you the tech demos shown to the developers

The version of this CD that most people got looked like this. For whatever reason, a few of them got this earlier packaging instead

eBay Price: $149.95

DS CELEBI DISTRIBUTION CARD

If you put this into your DS, any other DS in the vicinity will be able to download the giveaway Pokemon Celebi without hacking their game. It works for any DS holding Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Heart Gold or Soul Silver

This is another NFR, but with an extra notice that the retailer "MUST" return the card to Nintendo. Judging by the amount of Celebi cards that eBay has boasted in recent weeks, I'll bet that worked. "Sorry, I misplaced it. I think some guy in Pennsylvania has it now. BRB, I gotta go count some money."

eBay Price: $238.99

TANDY "VISUAL INFORMATION SYSTEM" WITH 30 SEALED "GAMES"

Also known as the system that singlehandedly killed the Tandy brand -- it sold that badly

"Games" is in quote marks because it never had any. With the possible exception of the golf title, everything was educational and encyclopedia-like

eBay Price: $338

THE COMMODORE 65

At one point, a more advanced Commodore 64 was in development, which played all original C64 titles as well

It never made it out of the lab. Years later, Commodore's inventory was liquidated and the prototype C65s were acquired and sold by a third party (in the days before eBay, this party did it through magazine ads)

It's unknown how many working models exist

eBay Price: $20,100

BART AND THE BEANSTALK

This is one of those strange deals where the box is much more valuable than the cart. The Bart and the Beanstalk cart, alone, goes for $3.

But with the box?

eBay Price: $399.00

VIRTUAL BOY KIOSK #2

Quite different from the stand-up version seen in the previous installment. For the space-starved video game outlet, this model was meant for countertops

eBay Price: $765

JAGUAR CD DEMO UNIT THAT DOESN'T WORK

The finalized unit didn't work either

eBay Price: $59.99

SEALED "STACK-UP"

The second and last game made for R.O.B. is rare these days due to how terrible its sales were

This even rarer unopened copy was cluelessly donated to a Goodwill, which knew better and posted it on eBay. At least it went to a charitable cause

eBay Price: $830.00

LEAFY GREEN WII

Developer's Wii units (which can't play regular market Wii games) have green fronts

There are actually two different models...another kind has a hard drive inside and allows the developer to transfer his game directly from the computer to the Wii without burning a disc. Those particular ones are red

eBay Price: $330.00

OFFICIALLY LICENSED MARIO SHEET MUSIC

If you don't remember "Hot Cross Buns" being used in a Mario game, your memories aren't faulty. This is a book of generic school sheet music that just uses the characters

Remember when Mario taught typing? Now Mario teaches glee club

eBay Price: $19.99

BIOHAZARD 5th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL PACKAGE

"Resident Evil" elsewhere, in case you need to be reminded

Inside this cardboard box is an attache case. Inside the attache case are all these things

Limited to 10,000 copies, and includes every PS1 game in the series up to that point, with special labeling

eBay Price: $325.00

PUMPED-UP SUPER MARIO KICKS

From Converse

A limited edition, made for Mario's 25th anniversary, and available only in Japan, though they'll cover feet just as well anywhere else

I'm sure if Nintendo could region-lock shoes, they would

eBay Price: $329

NINTENDO COLOR TV-GAME 6

From back before Miyamoto, when Nintendo had no original video game ideas

eBay Price: $99

SAD LOOKING Q-BERT

At least he's not swearing

eBay Price: $42.96

ZELDA ORACLE OF AGES/SEASONS PROMOTIONAL COLOR-CHANGING MUG

The leaves change color based on the temperature of the liquid within

Of all the promotional press giveaways I've seen, this ranks among the coolest

eBay Price: $250.00

WORLD'S RAREST GENESIS CART

Only three were made....there are far more of the NWC World Championships cart, so I dunno, this could be the rarest cart ever

The story behind it is much too long to fit into a blurb here, but in summary, Blockbuster experimented with flash carts that you would burn games onto instead of renting physical copies. For various reasons, they didn't go through with it

This one still has The Jungle Book burned into it

eBay Price: $1,509.00

"GOLD MINE" FOR THE ATARI

A very hard to find 2600 game published independently in Australia

Could you ask for a more appropriate name?

eBay Price: $425.00

EARTHBOUND CAR AIR FRESHENER

Because "This Game Stinks"

The average price of the actual game on eBay is a little less than this, but not by much

Oh baby!
Offense went up by 3!

eBay Price: $199.95

POKEMON BOX

A very rare Gamecube title that was only sold at the New York Nintendo Store or online

Not really a game, but a storage device for your extra Pokemon from the GBA Ruby and Sapphire titles. It also enabled you to play those games on the TV without a Game Boy Player

Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 for N64 could do similar things

eBay Price: $283.39

CLAY FIGHTER: SCULPTOR'S CUT

This is the most valuable commercial N64 title on eBay, especially with its packaging intact. This was only available as a rental from Blockbuster

The regular Clay Fighter 63 1/3 was released a few months earlier, with much of its promised content removed due to schedule constraints. Sculptor's Cut is the only version worth owning

eBay Price: $560

SUPER VIDEO ARCADE CARTRIDGE SYSTEM (unopened!)

It's actually an albino Intellivision

Sears used to sell exclusive models of Atari and Mattel consoles, and several Pong machines before them, under their own brand, Tele-Games. This was back when if Sears wanted to re-shell your product and claim it as theirs, you had to agree, because without Sears your sales were sunk. Their power is considerably less pronounced in this century

eBay Price: $435.67

PLAYSTATION 1 HOLIDAY ORNAMENT

A promotional item mailed to retail managers back when the word "Playstation" sounded more like a jungle gym than a game console

The exact year it was given out is unknown

eBay Price: $37.00

MEGA MAN V (Game Boy version) DEVELOPER CONCEPT SKETCH

Sagging game profits in Japan have their developers looking more longingly at the Western market instead. Rumor has it Capcom is not interested in Mega Man at this time because he's "too Japanese."

eBay Price: $250

"ATARI 2600" FOR SALE

Do you want to tell him, or should I?

eBay Price: $500
